If not for the gratitude of arvery small nunber of

DAY AT THE BEACH A
It's mid-August. EL Nino has treated the Midwest
wonderfully. The rest of the world may be parched or
drowned, but this area has experienced gloriously
moderate temperatures since last fall, with regular
rains. The corn and soy bean crops are very lush and
hearty. This bodes poorly for the farmers, because a
boutiful crop drops prices. After all, the speculators
thive on scarcity to blackmail the agents of the
hungry into paying more. Much of it will rot in silos
rather than be given to the starving masses around the
globe. Capitalism looks solely to Profit - not to f
people!
I'm at Lake Manteno, waiting for my family. This
is our swimming hole. It's a throwback in time. A
ratt, a beachhouse, children making sand castles, young
lifeguards and folding chairs: Large trees shade the
area and people play volleyball. It's not crowded and
the water is pretty clean. Boats tow kids on
innertubes. Seagulls, ducks and the occasional turtle,
mix among the humans and eat the discarded chips.
The sun’s been coming up blood red everyday
lately. It's probably just pollution, but it has an
ominous feel to it.
This is the first year where the one-after-another
0.5. flags along the main streets for Memorial Day,
seemed sinister to me. It felt like Nuremberg, 1936.
Last night I went to a “children’s parade.” It
was thoroughly controlled by the police. They treat
the citizens with such indifferent arrogance. It's as
if FEMA is already in control. The people accept - no
rejoice - in their total loss of freedom of action.
Most would like to see the jailings accelerated, have
the sitcoms include more nothing, etc. It's as if they
want human thought to be reduced to a pre - big bang
size, so fearful of change. They are so afraid of
losing their “freedom” that they’ve already willingly
forfeited it, without a whimper. America asleep.
I went to go meet Micheal Novick of L.A.

be held in Columbus in Oclober was broughl up. Some of us will go
there and parlicipale, and even conduct a workshop.
New members discussed fhe problems racisls are causing in their

White sefflers moved in in he 1840's and 1850's. The Ojibwe fiibes
were compelled lo sign reafies in 1826, 1837 and 1842, which
relinquished confrol of fhe fimber, minerol and land, including the
soil beneath Lac du Flambeau.
The Indians received a meager pittance in refum. In 1850,
President Zachary Taylor issued an Execulive Order fo force the
Indians fo collect Iheir freaty annuilies in Sandy Lake in Minnesola
and relocale fo Mole Lake Reservation, only. In the spring of 1851,
many Wisconsin Ojibwe people died duiing this forced eviction. It
became known as the “Sandy Lake Death March.” The Indians were
shorichanged and given rolten food. Disease was rampant. Six
hundred and thirly men , women and children died because of Ihis,

Lake Superior without a guarantee that they would be allowed o
live in Wisconsin. Reservations were sef aside in Lac du Flombeau,
Bad River, Red Clilf, Mole Lake and Lac Courte Oreilles.
More selllers came. Old growlh forest was shipped by lodggers,
and the Ojibwe were forced fo abandon their seasonal migrations.
Railroads, missionaries and fourisls came. Lake levels were made
higher with the construction of logging dams. Minerals, fish, game
and lrees were exploited, mercilessly. Much of fhe confrol of
eservalion land was removewd from the Indians by means of
‘allolment.” “Measures for allotment had been included in most
Indian frealies a5 a way 1o compensale people of mixed-blood and

extension of American cilizenship 1o Indians who could prove their

trees for the logging companies and fum into Christian formers.
The Davis Acl was amended 1o allow the leasing of reservation
fand to logging comparies fo expecite the removal of lumber.
In 1895, 1he Indian Service openedifs boarding school in Lac du
Flombeau. “Children ot the school endured separation from heir
fomilies, rigorous discipline and ifimidation. Those who survived the
regimen were belfer educated - in ferms of white cullure - than any
previous generafion of Ojibwes.” 3
In 1901, property faxes were begun. To pay these foxes,
reservation lond wos sold fo whie fourists. "Choice waterfront
acreage was the first land sold. Most of if passed info the hands of
the resort and summer home owners'who established the fourist
industry of Lac du Flambeau.” 4
In the 30's, the Davis Act was repealed and fhe Indians were
given theillusion of “self-govemment." Tribal Councils were elected
with their own constifutions, based not upon Indian inferpretations,
but rather, sticlly modeled affer the U, model. George Brown Sr,
became fhe firstTribal Chairman of Lac du Flambeav.-Although,
‘wilhout jurisdiction of the londs and walers of the reservations, they
had nolhing 10 self-govem with.
“Lasling nearly 50 years, the allolment period has definitely
reshaped Lac du Flombeau. What might have been a remnant
enclave of the Norfhwoods eco-system. became another parcel of
‘worked-over cul over ground, ifs old-growlh forest mowed, s
marshes and rice beds llooded. ifs loke levels raised and maintained
by man-made doms. What might have been an isolated island of
Indian fife became a checkerboard community whose residents —
both whife and Indian — perched on the economic edge and
whose livelihood depended on fourist dollars — just ke the rest of
Norther Wisconsin.” 5
At the Indian boarding school, children aged 5 through the feens,

“Alter World Wor I, the Bureau of indian Affairs encouraged the .
exodus of the Indians off the reservations, info urban areas such as
Milwaukee and Chicago, again, fo “improve” their lot by the
drowning of their cullure info the dominant (white) culture. Small
Indian communities redeveloped in the cifies, and in fact, one of the
‘most important Indian activisls in Chicago (or anywhere) in the 60's
and 70's was Michael Chosa, native fo Lac du Flambeau.
The poverly of Ihe reservation was lerrible. Indians lived i for
poper shacks with plastic sheefing for windows fo withstond the
brutal Northwoods winters, siripped of their cullural heritage and
knowlegde of how their forebears survived, using elaborate teepees
of wood, bark, skins and sap. In the sixfies, Lyndon Johnson's "War
on Poverly" came fo Lac du Flombeau and built an ugly sking of
ccheap, indenfical duplexes, which many Flambeau Indians sfill must
ive in. Asin Southeast Asio, where racist genocide was a daily
American staple, the U.S. govemment lost this “war” miserably, as
‘wel. The sfll dreadful, but very visible housirig gave the whites an
object fo concoct racist perceptions of the Hambeau Indians os
being lazy, dependent and shiffless. Without understanding either
the rudiments of how racism works or any frue knowledge of the
Indians predicament, history or their dealings with the state, whites
grew increasingly resentful, bigotted and fearful of Indians. This was
50, especially since Lac du lambeau had developed a repulation
for mililantcy due to the courageous exploits of Chosa and others.
Al one stage, | believe they took over a Nike Missile base site in
either Chicago or Joliet, fo dramalize their demonds. Lac du
Flombeau was definitely a spearhead in the resurgence of Indian
‘awareness and empowerment. The Indian haling racists, olways
singled out Flambeau Indions for parficular vitriol.

Racism and Treaty Rights in Lac du Flambeau, Wi
Lac du Flambeau is an Indian reservalion which resls in the hear
of the Wisconsin Norhwoods. This is a wondrous land of birchwood
forests and the larges! concenlration of freshwaler fishing lokes in
Ihe world. It is also a land of bilter poverly, amongst moslly offluent,
while vacationers. Flombeau was ot fhe epicenter of a decades-
long siruggle of the Chippewa Indians to exercise Iheir long-
standing spearfishing realy fights. This fhey did - among a vast sea
of naked racist infimidation ond sweeping ignorance.
Loc du Flombeau means “Lake of fhe Torches.” For centuies,
Chippewa fishers would fish he lakes, at night. in birchbark canoes
with forches. 1o spof the walleye. whose eyes shine in reflection fo
fight, and spear them for food.
These canoes were ideal, as they were lighiweight, durable.
‘walerproof and flexible. The Chippewa made exlensive use of
birchbark, fashioning snowshoes, foboggans, wiing tablets and
boskes with it. Along with hunfing game, such as deer, rabbit, even
bear for food, clothing and housing. they also gathered blue, straw,
choke, ras ond cran - beries. They planfed what vegelables would
grow i the sandy soll. such as corn. polaloes and squash. They
horvested maple sugar and wild fice 10 found out Iheir diet. They
lived in a migratory fashion throughout Norlhem and Central
Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, Minnesota and parls of Southem
Canada.
As the Europeans invaded his areo, things changed. The French
demanded furs. including beaver, muskrat, ofler, mink, deer, bear
and marten. In exchange, the Indians were forced o accept rum,
whiskey and wine. As the French gol more demonding and as the
pells began to dwindle, the pressure on the Indians was increased
Ihrough coersion, violence and alcohol.
After fighling many wars against the French and Bilish, the
Ojibwe people were forced fo migrale fo Northem and Centrol
Wisconsin. Their fraifional life, based on seasonal movements -
maple sugor in fhe spring, com gardens and berry beds in the
summer, ihe rice marshesin the fall and deerin the winter - was
being squeezed.

Dear Anthony Brazil
I will ry fo relate to you what is going on in Brazil in
a few lines, with my inadequate english.
Like all Lafin American countries, Brazil is living in a
depression fime. The public sphere is being shrunk.
The irrationality of the capitalist economy is being
maximized. Our energy, our communication systems,
our colleges, - everything - is being sold 1o private
hands. The government is selling the public
companies (that don't work for profif) for much less
than their real value, and paying the international
banks with this money.
If there is a government! You can see an enfire
couniry being sold to imperialists, because it's not the
people who decide about their lives, but rather it's
the government.
The unemployment never had got the actual
numbers since | was bom. (I'm 24.) 1am an
unemployed anarcho-punk rocker / chemical
engineer. | came from a middle-class family whom |
still depend economically upon. In third world
countries, the state doesn't pay or give anything o
the unemployed, like what used to happen in some
European countries.

economic security, he got.
My generation is falling in an economic hole, built
by my father's generation. It is an economic
depression. The poverly is really growing.
Brazil doesn't have a revolutionary tradition. The
people are very passive, just walch T.V., date, play
soccer... It is really sad seeing so much (2) rebellion in
Lalin American countries in the past, and nowadays,
the Brazilians look like they're sleeping.
The only popular movement really expressive is the
MS.T. (landless movement.) Formed by people who
have nothing fo lose and want a piece of land to
work. The MS.T. s very organized. They occupy
unproductive lands in the best direct action style.
MS.T. is organized in the whole couniry. They are so
expressive that the govenment cannot ignore them,
nor their requirements.
But, MS.T.is not like the Indians in Chiapas. MST. is
not as revolutionary as the Zapatistas. Their ideals are
only confined to the economic sphere. They don't
question a lot of authoritarian institutions. In some
aspecls, MS.T. is conservative. The left parties have
got foo much influence in the movement. Part of
that cannot be considered as a good influence.
The anarchists in Brazil are few, not very much
organized and having anfalmost despicably meager,
social influence. But one day, the story was different.
In the end of last century, many European immiarants
brought the anarchist ideals to Brazil. They organized
and created the trade unions in Brazil. The anarchists
had the main influence in the working class fights ‘fill
1930. The communist manipulation, the state Sz
repression and other factors, caused the decrease of
the anarchist movement in Brazil. But, in the 90's we
are growing up, not on a large scale, but...
| think that's all for a while.

Dear Leo, Thanks for wiiling. Like a typical American,
I'd be lost if | fried fo communicate in Portugese,

You make your points, very well. I'm sure you're a
very good social analyst in Portugese.
Very few Americans possess even an inkling of
whatit is like to live in another country, much less how
the United States is making these people suffer.
We're taught to not care about people outside the
US. Aswe steal and pillage fo gorge upon several
fimes our share of the world's resources, waste and
pollute the world at a suicidal rate, we expect
countries o pony up what money they have to our
stick up men - the "World" Bank, Wall Street, the IMF,
elc. Real human beings around the world are
suffering and dying because the few ruling America
insist on even more bilions and trillions in their coffers.
It's utterly, cosmically obscene and the whole world
should revolt as one and end this shit, once and for
alll Keep fighting, my friend. You speak the fruth.

Dear Stink, I'm real glud 10 hear you
artistic talents in service (o the cause! You're a terrific comic artist
! adored that picture you sent for me. It was a picture of earth with

South Chicago ARA Alert #1. Make those pamphlcts and comi and
draw political cartoons. You have a great talent. Stockpile them, If

more. You won't make any money anyway, but you will get more
people aware of your work, and your work will Improve, become

Hi Anthony! How's life2 Here's Lina and Rui from
Experimental Distro. Thanks for writing and for all the
‘Zines!l We didn't have the time yet to read 55
everything, but from what we read we want fo say to
you: Don't feel alone in your fight. There's lots of
people fighting out there the s@me fight! The two of
s here are with you (and your family) on the front
line! The network we create by mail gives us lots of
strength. That's why we write so much and try to
support lots of people. We're going to copy your
‘zines and sell it cheap through our catalogue.
About the computer you want. Tell us and we
could send you disks with different type of letter
(fonts) or just anarchist pictures or any other thing.
OXK. . as you can see, we're both sending you a
picture from us both. Our hair is no longer long like
that, butit's us. Do you have any with your family2
Send us one, plecse.
If you want, you can send a text so that we can
putitin our ‘zine. It would be a pleasure.
It's good to write to people older than us and that
never gave up of the real fight. For us is so inspiring as
are the bands which give us strength to continue. We
also write-with Fred Woodworth, although he didn't
write for some fime.
We decided to write to Sean Lambert. He looks a
very good person and also committed with his
thoughts. Thanks for sending his great ‘zine! (It's

You should do a flier so your ‘zine could reach
more people. If you want, you can send the text and
drawings and we could have everything on the $4
computer and send you the original for you to make
copies. A flier is always a good idea.
It's a pity our distance, we could like fo meet you,
one day without any doubt... Anyway you have a
house here, no problem.
We think that's all for now.
Good luck with the new A R A chapter and
grind those bastards down who are pro-airport!!!
Bye and kisses 1o all your FAMILY!

Dear Lina & Rui, That's why | write to lofs of people,
100. It really goes a long way bucking you up to face
the shit we all must deal with every day. It's a great 7
picture!* It's thrilling to see two people so obviously in
love, working hard to build anarchy. I've since
gotten that computer, written more zines and all that
stuff. I've talked to Huddersfield previously and
they've indeed written me back. They do great work.
Ihope you like the picture I sent. I would love to get
a alot of anarchist pictures, etc. My wife will help me
figure out all that “disk" stuff. Asitis, | use the
computer just to write and email. It's a fremendous
help in organizing work and writing. But | think it kind
of makes you a bit lazy, writing-wise. With just a
typewriter, you must really craft what you want to
say, concentrate and try to minimize mistakes. | think
it is always best fo write things out longhand first then
transcribe them onto a computer, fo develope
thoughts more fully. My sister-in-law hails from
Portugal and | am lucky fo get a real sense of the
vibrancy and joy for life your country exudes. | will
grind those pro-airport bastards down! Thankyou
very much! ARA is going cool. We have mostly
young, high school people, usually with their own
bands, in our group. They're into animal liberation,
punk music, fighting racism and stuff like that.
Make sure, Sean Lambert is one helluva man, who
fights hard for the realization of anarchy, everyday.
To me, he exempilifies what D.LY. is all about. | love
